Flies of the Nearctic Region / Handbook / History of Nearctic Dipterology

Flies of the Nearctic Region / Handbook / History of Nearctic Dipterology von Griffiths, Graham C, Stone, A
The "Flies of the Nearctic Region" is intended to be a counterpart to the Palaearctic series ("Die Fliegen der paläarktischen Region") under publication since 1924. We have been able to secure the support of North American dipterists for initiating this series because of the high reputation which the Palaearctic series enjoys.

Flies of the Nearctic Region / Homeodactyla and Asilomorpha / Bombyliidae

Flies of the Nearctic Region / Homeodactyla and Asilomorpha / Bombyliidae von Evenhuis, N L, Griffiths, Graham C, Hall, J C
Worldwide the family Bombyliidae contains upwards to 6,000 species which are distributed on every continental land mass except the areas of the extreme north and south. Within the Nearctic region approximately 1,200 species are known. The majority of the species are found in the arid southwestern United States and in northern Mexico. It is estimated that more than 80 % of the bombyliid fauna of the Nearctic is found within this area. The format for the present work will essentially follow the arrangement given in the Catalog of the Diptera of North America north of Mexico (Painter 8C Painter 1965), with the exception of the Systropodinae. Following the lead of European workers the members of the SystrOpodinae, Systmpus and Dolichomyia, have been accorded familial status and as such will be treated separately. As each subfamily is completed a complete bibliography will be inserted for that subfamily before going on to the next. Because the Bombyliidae of the Nearctic are so poorly known we have elected to postpone remarks concerned with classification, phylogeny, biology and morphology until the study of all the genera and species has been completed. It is with this in mind that we hope to obtain a better insight into these areas which certainly are in need of study. The following key separates the thirteen subfamilies of Bombyliidae currently recognized as occurring within the Nearctic region. For comparative purposes as well as completeness the family Systropodidae is also included in the key.

Flies of the Nearctic Region / Archaeodiptera and Oligoneura / Blephariceridae

Flies of the Nearctic Region / Archaeodiptera and Oligoneura / Blephariceridae von Griffiths, Graham C, Hogue, Charles L
Although a relatively small family (comprising approximately 270 world species), the Blephariceridae (net-winged midges) have been long recognized as having special potential significance to general studies of dipteran phylogeny and zoogeography because of their antiquity and very limited vagility. Their actual consideration in such studies has been restricted, however, because the faunas of major regions still remain untreated systematically, a failing largely due to the slight recognition afforded these midges by entomologists. They tend not to be taken except by dipterists and stream biologists with a special interest in them. The present work will salve this dearth of knowledge for the Nearctic Region, bringing together for the first time all available data on the 25 presently known North American species. Because collecting in the last few years has turned up only two cryptic new species, the likelihood of major new discoveries seems small. Yet much basic taxonomic work is still necessary, particularly with the eastern Blepharicera tenuipes group, to clarify the integrity and interrelationships of the species and to fill gaps in distributions. A great need is also apparent for morphometric and ecological studies on all the species.

Flies of the Nearctic Region / Orthogenya / Dolichopodidae: Hydrophorinae

Flies of the Nearctic Region / Orthogenya / Dolichopodidae: Hydrophorinae von Griffiths, Graham C, Hurley, Richard L
The limits of this subfamily have been the subject of some disagreement over the years, most of it centering on whether to include Thinophilus and Aphrosylus, or place them in separate subfamilies. We are following Robinson (1970), Ulrich (1980), and Negrobow (1981) in interpreting the group as including both. Negrobov (1981) groups the genera in 4 tribes and summarizes our present knowledge of the worldwide distribution of the subfamily. Nearctic species included in the subfamily share the following characters: head rounded, usually broader than high, rounded posteriorly, sometimes depressed immedi- ately posterior to vertex; vertex not excavated; subcranial cavity large to very large; facial area divided by transverse suture into “epistome” and clypeus; postverticals present, sometimes continuous with upper orbitals; scape (with 2 minor exceptions) without distinct setae on dorsal surface (if present, hypopygium less than 1/2 as long as abdomen); pedicel without apical finger-like projection on medial side; lst flagellomere may be elongate or lobed; arista usually dorsal, occasionally apical; palps large to very large, resting on proboscis; cheeks sometimes well developed.

Flies of the Nearctic Region / Cyclorrhapha II (Schizophora: Calyptratae) / Anthomyiidae

Flies of the Nearctic Region / Cyclorrhapha II (Schizophora: Calyptratae) / Anthomyiidae von Griffith, Graham C, Griffiths, Graham C
In the present work discussion of the relationships between the genera of Anthomyiidae and the characterization of the family itself will be postponed until after the treatment of genera and species. This will allow prior publication of the generic revision by Dr. Verner Michelsen (based on his thesis defended in 1981), which promises to contain new information. The recent monograph of Palaearctic Anthomyiidae by Hennig (1966a?76a) made considerable progress towards clarifying the identity of the Palaearctic species, which were previously in extensive confusion due to inadequate descriptions and lack of study of type specimens. Hennig?s work will be used here as the authority for the identity of species described from the Palaearctic Region, where no contrary information has since come to light. However, it should be remarked that Hennig?s study of the older European types was incomplete, and some nomenclatural changes are resulting from further studies of old collections by Michelsen and Pont. Knowledge of the Nearctic fauna of Anthomyiidae lags behind that of the Palaearctic fauna, a situation which it is the aim of this publication to rectify. The work of Dr. Hugh Huckett, for sixty years the only North American taxonomist working on the family, while an improvement over earlier literature has several deficiencies. Many species cannot be recognized from his descriptions due to lack of information on the terminalia. His association of the sexes was often conjectural and unreliable (many of his ?allotypes? not belonging to the same species as his holotypes). And he proposed many synonyms for species already described from Europe. In order to place the taxonomy of this family on a firmer basis, it is intended to examine the terminalia of as many as possible of the holotypes of species described from the Nearctic Region. The limits of the family Anthomyiidae as a monophyletic group still need final confirmation. In most of the character sequences so far analysed the genera included in Anthomyiidae show relatively primitive (plesiomorphous) conditions, and the suspicion thus arises that we may not be dealing with a monophyletic group but with a non-monophyletic assemblage of primitive subgroups of Calyptratae. In his discussion of this problem Hennig (1976a: ii) has, however, been able to indicate one modification (apomorphous character) which suggests that the Anthomyiidae in the sense of his work are indeed monophyletic. This is that the partially fused cerci (mesolobus) have continuous sclerotized connections with the inner surfaces of the gonostyli (called surstyli in Hennig?s work), instead of forming articulated joints with them (Zapfenverbindung) as in most other Calyptratae. The author agrees that this is an important apomorphous character, and it convinces him to accept Hennig?s family concept at least provisionally. Further review of this problem must await publication of Michelsen?s work. No attempt will be made to describe larvae (or other immature stages) in this treatment. The larvae have been described for so few Nearctic species that any comprehensive treatment is impossible at this time. But where larval descriptions have been published, the references will be given.
