The three volumes in this set contain the editions of Bibles printed in the eras of orthodoxy, pietism and the Enlightenment. The forces at work in these eras are reflected in the forms of the Bibles. In the 16th century, the text was said to be firmly established. However the linguistic changes in German made it necessary to make serious changes in the biblical text. Entirely unlike the Reformation era, historical positivity and archival awareness resulted in a demand for the original text. This however was countered by the subjectivity of feelings and emotion. It was both of these forces which led to revisions and an abundance of new translations. The catalogue attempts to indicate the stages of revision and gives the literary and artistic additions. Apart from its use as a bibliography, this catalogue of the most sumptuous collection of German Bibles of that era provides a rough description of the way the Bible changed in changing temporal horizons.

It is the collections of Greek manuscripts in London, Oxford and Wolfenbüttel which stand out among all others. As far as the 16th and 17th century are concerned, these are surpassed by the collection of Greek Bibles in Stuttgart. This is due to Josias Lorck‹s and Georg Wolfgang Panzer‹s passion for collecting. Among the editions which were added later are almost all the personal copies of Eberhard and Erwin Nestle with corrections they made.

Only the Württembergische Landesbibliothek is in possession of all Upper German pre-Lutheran Bibles. It also has many of the original Wittenberg versions of Luther‹s translation and revision as well as the reprints from Augsburg, Basel, Nuremberg, Strasbourg, Zurich etc as well as the principal Catholic and spiritualist Bible translations. This volume provides new insight and additional material on the history of the Bible and biblical illustrations.

The Württembergische Landesbibliothek also has one of the largest collections in the world of Latin Bibles in print which make it possible to study the printing history of the Latin Bible text. The incunabula era is very well represented by 78 complete editions of the Bible. The complicated history of the revision of the Latin Vulgate Bible can be traced almost completely using the works in Stuttgart. The same is true of the dissemination of new Latin translations from the basic Hebrew and Greek texts. Of special significance for the history of biblical philology are the first editions of the Old Latin translation (Vetus Latina), which were printed in the late 17th and 18th centuries. In addition there are numerous annotated bilingual editions with French, German and Italian translations from the 17th to the 19th century. The descriptions in the catalogue include the stages of revision and contextual dependencies, identify the literary and artistic contributors and list the individual characteristics of each book. The volumes contain several indexes.
