A complex process of transformation creating the breakthrough into the modern age, with effects that are still formative today, took place in the history of the Western church in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The most important semantic elements in it, which gradually separate out into the Age of Denominations, Pietism and the Enlightenment, describe three forms of Christian life and thought that overlap in many ways and only produce a sufficiently nuanced overall picture of early modern church history when they are viewed
as forming a complete whole. This second sub-volume introduces the Enlightenment and Pietism, currents that had a lasting influence on intellectual and religious history in Europe, and also examines the development of the Orthodox churches in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.

This textbook presents in compact form what one needs to know today in the field of practical theology. It can accompany university courses and can be used to prepare for examinations. It is also useful for further education for ministers and priests. The book starts with four brief survey articles on the prerequisites for contemporary practical theological thinking. The central fields of Christian practice are then developed in a problem-oriented fashion, in each case based on the following structure: marking out current challenges, orientation in the field of action, empirical findings, historical and systematic reference points, basic practical and theological provisions, current debates and issues for the future.

The >long 19th century<- from the French Revolution to the end of the World War I - can also be perceived in church history as an epoch of ruptures as well as new beginnings,
orientations towards tradition as well as modernization. The "short 20th century" - marked by the consequences of two world wars and fascist as well as communist ictatorships - presented the churches with new challenges, not least that of secularization. On the other hand, this century is marked by an ecumenical rapprochement of the denominations, by an intensive coming to terms with the past of the churches and by their participation in democratic reconstruction. These two major sections, which pay particular attention to developments in Germany and Europe, are supplemented
by a contribution on the history of Orthodoxy.

This teaching and textbook describes the biblical writings, first by content and structure, and then follows their process of coming into being back to the respective reason for their origin. The framework for this is the canon of the Hebrew Bible, which is defined in the introductory section by the Greek and Christian Bible and the so-called Apocrypha. The four parts of the volume are introduced by overview chapters: the Pentateuch as a whole, the Deuteronomistic historical work, the phenomenon of prophecy and Hebrew poetry. The author also appropriately discusses the progress and current state of research. Comprehensive bibliographies characterise the entire work. Anyone wishing to intensively examine the Old Testament and its origins will obtain sound information here.
