Psychotherapy has a long historical development, with a rich stock of theoretical concepts, tried and tested interventions, and clinical and scientific evidence. It is also constantly undergoing further evolution and differentiation. In the process, developmental contexts and solid knowledge may also occasionally be forgotten or ?rediscovered= using new terms, so that it is difficult to consolidate any overarching ?core knowledge= in psychotherapy. The purpose of this book is to present the current state of theory development and practice in relation to the four main psychotherapeutic procedures in the context of their historical development & and this may also counteract any occasional ?forgetting of history=. This is not a history book, however, but an up-to-date textbook that provides an overview of the foundations of psychotherapy across different procedures and schools.

Young people face various biological, psychological and social changes - during a phase of life in which major decisions affecting their future lives and careers are being made. This book presents the current state of research on young adulthood in a comprehensible way and explains the developments that take place during this formative period of life. The book is divided into five major topics, which provide a comprehensive overview of the major aspects involved that have been discussed academically. Initially, there is a glance at the biological foundations, followed by a discussion of the influence of social environments (family, friends and school) and of the media. The third part is concerned with important goals in young people=s development: forming an identity, developing moral ideas and learning basic competences (choosing a profession). The last two sections discuss social topics such as migration, political socialization and important developmental problems (including eating disturbances, ADHS, substance abuse), as well as options for prevention and approaches to intervention.

During the last few decades, the process of identity development among young people has become delayed and the content of it has also changed, due to changes in society in general and in family dynamics. A strong urge to explore in many areas and less commitment to educational, occupational and partnership concerns have become typical. The body is the focus of attention for both boys and girls, although with widely differing evaluations; sexual identity and partner preferences have become highly variable. This volume describes the process of identity development and ways in which it is threatened in an age of increased narcissism, extreme changes in parenting styles and increasing cultural diversity.

The numerous findings on the development of attachment that have been published in the field of developmental psychology over many decades, along with the attachment theory developed by John Bowlby, are now also being accepted in clinical psychology, psychotherapy and medicine. This handbook sums up the findings on the importance of attachment in various phases of life, as well as the result of clinical research on attachment in relation to psychological and physical disturbances. The special relevance of the theory lies in its fields of application - in prevention and in psychotherapy in various treatment settings.
