Jean-Frédéric Schnyder. Kleine Bilder 2015–2019
Ausst. Kat. Galerie Eva Presenhuber, Zürich, 2019
Eva Presenhuber
For the show, Schnyder has painted 26 series – one for each letter of the alphabet – containing 6 small-format paintings each of which are presented in a small cardboard box, these boxes fitting together in yet another box. All 156 paintings (oil on plywood) were painted using a grid and look like digital pixelated low-resolution images resembling pictograms. Motifs such as flowers, sunsets or typical swiss houses or interiors have been a part of Schnyder’s visual lexicon for a long time and show his often humorous way of bringing banal objects and perspectives together using masterful and historically informed styles.
