Unfortunately the manuscript of the ‹Wiener Logik‹ (Vienna Logic) was not discovered until all the plans for the Academy edition of Kant‹s collected works had almost been completed. The index volume attempts to show the significance of these little known lecture notes. Here as well, a lemmatized main index provides the entire language used in the lectures, a concordance facilitates the determination of places in the notes related to a certain subject, especially for those terms which are used often. About 20 pages of annotations establish the references to the ‹Kritik der reinen Vernunft‹, (Critique of Pure Reason), the reflections in the literary remains as well as the other transcripts and supplement the bibliographies of the Academy edition. In addition, the volume also corrects errors in this edition which alter the meaning in numerous places.

Meiers big ›Vernunftlehre‹ (Doctrine of Reason) is not a random source used by Kant in addition to numerous others. In fact it appears that Kant used Meier‹s big work as a compendium for his lectures to begin with and then switched over to Meier's ›Auszug aus der Vernunftlehre‹ (Excerpts from the Doctrine of Reason) after a few semesters. When he switched, he wrote down numerous excerpts from the big ›Doctrine of Reason‹ in his personal interleaved copy of this compendium, as Erich Adickes demonstrated. In her study of ›Kants Logikvorlesungen als neuen Schlüssel zur Architektonik der Kritik der reinen Vernunft‹ (FMDA I,9) (Kant's Lectures on Logic as a New Key to the Architectonics of the Critique of Pure Reason), Elfriede Conrad listed these meticulously. Thus this volume is an important supplement to the index volumes previously published concerning his works on logic. It shows precisely how Meier's big ›Doctrine of Reason‹ left a lasting mark on Kant's thinking.

The ›Beweisgrund‹ (The One Possible Basis for a Demonstration of the Existence of God) was Kant's first work on metaphysics published in German in 1763. It documents the initial position of Kant's metaphysical thinking. The index reviews the language of this text in the established manner and according to the standards of the FMDA, thus creating the prerequisites for a more precise understanding of the breaks and the shifts to which the problem of God in Kant‹s thinking was subjected up to the publication of the ›Kritik der reinen Vernunft‹ (Critique of Pure Reason) and even afterwards. Furthermore, the index enables us to make more substantiated statements on the dates on which the reflections in the literary remains were written, a subject of some controversy, and provides a clearer picture of Herder's own part in the transcripts he made of Kant‹s lectures.

In addition to the analysis of Wolff‹s language in this work, there are separate indexes in which the philosophical disciplines mentioned by Wolff, among other things, have been compiled. These also list his self-references which pervade the text and give it extraordinarily great depth of argumentation. Based on the material made available in the index, the introduction makes some deductions in regard to Wolff‹s mainly philosophical intentions, thus showing how the studies of language statistics can be of use for the consolidation of the interpretation as well as for the interpretation of new aspects of a philosophical work.

Kant's comments in his personal interleaved copy of the ›Beobachtungen über das Gefühl des Schönen und Erhabenen‹ (Observations on the Feeling of the Beautiful and Sublime) are probably his most personal notes. They are part of the handwritten literary remains which were published first and in addition to numerous anthropological reflections also contain important preliminary drafts of Kant‹s critical ethics. For the first time, this volume of indexes provides accurate insight into the range of the topics dealt with in the notes. In addition, the index on the ›Observations on the Feeling of the Beatiful and Sublime‹ included in the volume makes it possible to compare the language of the two text corpora and thus to draw conclusions about Kant's language development, and thus also about the time it took to write the ›Observations‹. Thus this index volume also provides criteria for the tiresome question pertaining to determining the date of Kant‹s literary remains as a whole.
