During the 40 year period in which Christian von Ehrenfels taught in the Universities of Vienna and Prague, it was problems in aesthetics which stood always in the foreground of his theoretical interests. He himself, however, published only a small number of essays on the theory of art, essays opposing the newly grown naturalistic movement in art theory, in which Ehrenfels -a dedicated follower of Richard Wagner - is concerned above all with the interpretation of musical works of art. Part I of this new edition will consist of these essays, which derive from Ehrenfels’ earlier creative period (1891-1906) with a theoretical monograph on the choral drama - a topic of quite special significance to Ehrenfeis since the greater part of his own literary efforts were conceived in this medium. Part II of the edition comprises more substantial investigations in aesthetics drawn from Ehrenfels’ scientific Nachlass and published here for the first time. Of the three manuscripts selected, the first served as the text of a lecture course on Wagner first delivered by Ehrenfels in Vienna in 1896. The two remaining pieces treat of general problems in aesthetics. Ehrenfels first of all discusses, in considerable detail, the manifold preconditions which must be met if an aesthetically evaluative judgment is to come about. He then goes on to deal above all with the question - which he answer in the affirmative - of the existence of absolute beauty.

Ehrenfels’ first contribution to philosophy and psychology, published in 1886 and here reprinted, takes as its starting point the ideas of Paul Du Bois-Reymond. It deals with questions that Ehrenfels was to raise again thirty years later in the far-reaching work Cosmogony, which forms centre-piece of the present volume. He himself regarded this book as his Hauptwerk, the result of a life-time devoted to philosophical inquiry, in which metaphysical problems in particular had always claimed his attention. The aim of the Cosmogony, he wrote, “is to justify before the forum of reason a hypothesis about the origin of the world”. The aim is no less than to provide the metaphysical foundations of a new religious Weltanschauung rooted in scientific knowledge. Ehrenfels attempts to show how the origin and structure of the world can be understood as a result of the interplay of two fundamental principles - chaos, on the one hand, and Gestaltung or the production of Gestalten on the other. In addition to this attempt to develop a philosophy of religion, based Ehrenfels’ own early and influential work on the theory of Gestalt, the Cosmogony also contains remarkable contributions to the logical and ontological interpretations of probabilistic inference and causal explanation. The volume is introduced by R. M. Chisholm and contain updated bibliography as well as a table of content complete four volume edition.

The volume opens with Ehrenfels’ classic paper of 1890 ,On ‘Gestalt-qualities’” (“Über ‘Gestaltqualitäten’”). It is followed by a short summary of the fundamental features of the concept of a Gestalt, written by Ehrenfels only a few months before his death, and contains also a selection of other contributions to psychology, in particular those writings that are connected with Ehrenfels’ theory of value. The writings on ethics are mainly a continuation of the second part of the System of Value Theory, reprinted in vol. I. They also touch on a related topic - Ehrenfels’ ideas concerning the reform of social and sexual morality. Although Ehrenfels never published systematic investigation in the theory of knowledge, the volume contains a number of interesting, short pieces on the question of ,”unprovable knowledge”. An Original investigation of the law of prime numbers is also included in this epistemological section. The volume is completed by two previously unpublished papers from Ehrenfels’ literary remains.

This volume is the first ever collection of the writings on value theory of the great Austrian philosopher Christian von Ehrenfels. It consists principally of the monograph Werttheorie und Ethik (Value Theory and Ethics) and of the two-volume System der Werttheorie (System of Value Theory, Vol. 1: The General Theory of Values; Vol II: Fundamentals of an Ethic). Appealing on the one hand to ideas of the Austrian economists (Carl Menger and his school), and on the other hand to a psychological theory of desire, Ehrenfels attempts to develop a general theory of value from the standpoint of a strict relativism. This project is worked out in its most comprehensive form in the System der Werttheorie, where, on the basis of an analysis of the psychological elements which are involved in the phenomenon of human evaluation, Ehrenfels establishes the principles of his general theory. He then goes on to demonstrate the validity of this theory in the special sphere of ethical-value phenomena. Ehrenfels investigates in particular the psychological causes of and influences upon the formation of values, adopting, in analogy with the law of change in the organic sphere, an evolutionary account of the entire domain of human evaluation.
