The magnificent first edition of Khunrath’s ›Amphitheatrum‹ has always belonged to the rarest and most coveted books of Paracelsian theology, Christian Kabbalah, magic and alchemy. The reproductions of the artistically arranged texts and text images are preceded by a critical and historical study of Khunrath (ca. 1560–1605) as an important mystic of nature and the impact of his ›Amphitheatrum‹. The edition also provides a transcript and translation of the texts witin the images, an introduction to Khunrath’s iconographical program as well as an extensive bibliography of his works. These are succeeded by a complete reprint of the Hanau edition (1609), with its own unique augmentation and design, including illustrations of the engravings added since the Hamburg edition. The edition also contains a reprint of Johann Arndt’s ›Iudicium über die 4 Figuren‹ and a transcript of a mid-18th century German translation (based on the 1609 Hanau version), supplemented by a substantial introduction analyzing Khunrath’s theosophy within the context of 18th-century piety and enlightenment. A double concordance as well as a detailed name index complete the edition.

This collection of essays and critical collection of sources provides a long overdue overview of the dissemination and transmission of Jacob Böhmes (1575–1625) works. There is a particular focus on the collection of original manuscripts, manuscript copies and early printed versions which were compiled by the Dutch businessman Abraham Willemsz van Beyerland (1586/87–1648) in the 17th century. In addition to a detailed description of their origins, which reflect the climate of tolerance in Amsterdam at that time, there is a description of the collection up to the present time. The articles in this volume combine 20 years of Böhme research at the Ritman Research Institute in Amsterdam.

Adam Haslmayr (1560–1631?) is very closely linked to the early history of the Rosicrucian movement. He was the first to develop a position in favor of the Rosicrucians in his ‹Antwort an die lobwürdige Brüderschafft der Theosophen vom RosenCreutz‹ (Answer to the Praiseworthy Brother of the Theosophs of the RoseCross). This answer was published in 1612, two years before the publication of the ‹Fama Fraternitatis‹, and because of it he was sent to the galleys for four and a half years. It was the rediscovery of the one extant copy of the book which triggered the decision to publish this incunabulum of Rosicrucian literature. This resulted in the present monograph, which contains facsimile reprints of the ‹Answer‹ as well as of the catalogue of Haslmayr‹s writings printed by J. Morsius in 1626 under the title ‹Nuncius Olympicus‹. Based on mainly unknown handwritten documents from numerous libraries, the monograph describes the life and work of Adam Haslmayr from Tyrol, an unusual musician, school teacher, Paracelsist and theosophist. We are given a picture of the efforts made by Haslmayr and his two closest friends, Carl Widemann, a Paracelsist from Augsburg and a collector of manuscripts, as well as Prince August of Anhalt, a patron of literature written by Paracelsus and Weigel, to reveal the secret surrounding the Rosicrucian Manifestos which originated at that time.
