»Leistung führt zu Erfolg und Erfolg beruht auf Leistung« – so lässt sich das Versprechen der bürgerlichen Gesellschaft ausdrücken. Allerdings ist dies nicht unumstritten: Zwar fungiert das Leistungsprinzip als einzig öffentlich rechtfertigungsfähiger Maßstab der Statusvergabe, über den die postmoderne Gesellschaft ihrem Selbstverständnis nach verfügt, doch wird immer wieder auch Kritik an dem Leistungsprinzip deutlich. Gerade die Kirchen beteiligen sich an einer solchen Kritik und fühlen sich berufen zu mahnen, auch den Menschen, der zu keiner Leistung fähig ist, die Achtung nicht zu versagen.
Ziel des Bandes ist es, die unterschiedlichen ethischen, theologischen und historischen Diskurse zu Leistung und Erfolg im Schnittfeld von Sport, Gesellschaft und Kirche aufeinander zu beziehen und dadurch wechselseitig zu beleuchten.
