The sketch entitled ‹Sonnenwanderer‹, written in 1890, was the beginning of a work of literature which demonstrated a great deal of originality. Carl Hauptmann wrote his prose in order to „get closer to the riddle of life […] in complete dedication to the inner world, to the revelation of the soul, to the great outdoors» (H. M. Elster). The four early collections of prose in this volume show the path taken by the author starting from the sketch ‹Sonnenwanderer‹ and ‹Miniaturen‹ to the realistic stories from the Silesian mountain world ‹Aus Hütten am Hange‹ up to the taut novella in ‹Judas‹.
