The present publication is based on an international conference of the same name, held in February 2016 at the Martin-Luther University Halle-Wittenberg. It was dedicated to the phenomenon of the extra-urban nature of Greek sanctuaries and their sacral structure, thereby addressing the main theme of the research project „Kulte im Kult“ [Cults within cult]. The volume comprises fourteen contributions which address extra-urban sanctuaries at several levels. Mostly, the extra-urban status itself is the focus of analysis, with chapters taking a starting point in specific sanctuaries with certain functions. Others address and attempt to define this aspect as an overarching quality of cult sites. In addition, some contributions centre on the question of the religious microcosm of individual examples of this type of sanctuary, as well as on the resulting religious profiles.
