Whereas Kant’s writings in the early sixties were still focused on the consolidation of metaphysics, the ›Träume eines Geistersehers‹ (Dreams of a Spirit-Seer), published in 1766, marked a radical change in his perspective. Using a scathing criticism of rational psychology to represent his viewpoint, Kant brought about the downfall of the entire metaphysics. These were the first unmistakable hints of the ›Kritik der reinen Vernunft‹ (Critique of Pure Reason). The index shows in detail how this break with metaphysics and his turning to empiricism as a consequence of this was reflected in Kant’s language and vocabulary. This volume also concludes the lexical reappraisal of the main writings between 1762–1766, which means that all requirements have all been met in order to do a widespread reappraisal of the continuities and discontinuities in Kant’s philosophical development in the direction of critical philosophy on the secure basis of comprehensive linguistic findings.

Kant's writings in the 1760s document his increasing alienation from the philosophy of his time, which had been shaped mainly by Wolffianism. At the same time, Kant undertook important steps towards a development of his own critical philosophy. The lexical reappraisal of three consecutive writings, each of which has its own main index, concordance and the customary separate indexes, makes this procedure transparent for Kant‹s metaphysics and ethics through detailed findings of word count statistics. Taken together, the two index volumes 38 and 39 enable us to make verified statements about these pre-critical writings concerning the dates on which the reflections in the literary remains were written, a subject of some controversy, and also enable us to determine more precisely Herder's own part in the transcripts he made of Kant's lectures.

Meiers big ›Vernunftlehre‹ (Doctrine of Reason) is not a random source used by Kant in addition to numerous others. In fact it appears that Kant used Meier‹s big work as a compendium for his lectures to begin with and then switched over to Meier's ›Auszug aus der Vernunftlehre‹ (Excerpts from the Doctrine of Reason) after a few semesters. When he switched, he wrote down numerous excerpts from the big ›Doctrine of Reason‹ in his personal interleaved copy of this compendium, as Erich Adickes demonstrated. In her study of ›Kants Logikvorlesungen als neuen Schlüssel zur Architektonik der Kritik der reinen Vernunft‹ (FMDA I,9) (Kant's Lectures on Logic as a New Key to the Architectonics of the Critique of Pure Reason), Elfriede Conrad listed these meticulously. Thus this volume is an important supplement to the index volumes previously published concerning his works on logic. It shows precisely how Meier's big ›Doctrine of Reason‹ left a lasting mark on Kant's thinking.

Seine ›Gedanken von der wahren Schätzung der lebendigen Kräfte‹ spielen allerdings in der Geschichte der Vis-viva-Kontroverse keine wichtige Rolle. Umso bedeutender ist das Buch als Keimzelle des kantischen Denkens. Schon hier vertritt Kant die Ansicht, die zeitgenössische Metaphysik weise eine grundlegende Schwäche auf; schon hier verknüpft er damit den Vorrang des Methodenproblems und sucht nach den Quellen des Streites.

Kant's comments in his personal interleaved copy of the ›Beobachtungen über das Gefühl des Schönen und Erhabenen‹ (Observations on the Feeling of the Beautiful and Sublime) are probably his most personal notes. They are part of the handwritten literary remains which were published first and in addition to numerous anthropological reflections also contain important preliminary drafts of Kant‹s critical ethics. For the first time, this volume of indexes provides accurate insight into the range of the topics dealt with in the notes. In addition, the index on the ›Observations on the Feeling of the Beatiful and Sublime‹ included in the volume makes it possible to compare the language of the two text corpora and thus to draw conclusions about Kant's language development, and thus also about the time it took to write the ›Observations‹. Thus this index volume also provides criteria for the tiresome question pertaining to determining the date of Kant‹s literary remains as a whole.

This index volume is a substantial and comprehensive tool for helping to understand the development of Kant's vocabulary starting with his background influenced strongly by Wolff up to the more mature structures. In addition, the volume contains specific data on the individual dissertations. The analysis of the use of Latin terminology is also crucial for understanding Kant’s critical period, in which the Latin terms serve not only to clarify the German words but also expand the philosophical range of his vocabulary.
