In 1980, Miron Zownir emigrated to the USA, where he lived for the next fifteen years; first in New York, then in Los Angeles, and Pittsburgh. In New York, back then arguably the world's most fascinating and permissive metropolis, Zownir's peculiar approach to cover the city's multiple-layered day-to-day lunacy was quickly recognised by the local scene as the TEUTONIC PHENOMENOGRAPHER (Village Voice). Shot in moody, expressionistic b/w, Zownir's pictures from that period give a penetrating insight to inner-city sub-cultural spheres, which, in their original local context, have since perished in the boom of the 90s. His lens captured the untamed lust at the gay-parties, just shortly before Aids massively claimed its victims; the futile protest of artists and offbeat performers; the hopelessness on the Bowery; the shadowy world of hookers or junkies. Zownir's photographs of the "Sex Piers" have become legendary documents by now. The shutdown and dilapidated port area located between the Westside Highway and the Hudson River, with its sunbathing section for nudists and the surrounding "halls of the anonymous lust", was a popular meeting place among the gay-scene. Zownir meanwhile has gained the reputation of being one of the most uncompromising contemporary photographers. Some critics claim that Zownir, in his own characteristic manner, ties on where Diane Arbus and Weegee had stopped. But when it comes to the basis of his artistic intention, Miron Zownir would rather point to a quote from Kafka's "The Castle" then being compared to other photographers: "If one has the strength to look at the things incessantly, more or less without ever closing the eyes, one sees much. But if one lessens the effort only once and closes the eyes, it all immediately vanishes into darkness."

Stamatis Papazoglou detects, collects, combines, destroys and reassembles.
His paintings, collages and assemblages are congeries of fragments of our consumer society and the clear design of contemporary abstract painting. It creates multi-layered, complex imagery in which time and space overlap and intertwine. Stamatis Papazoglou is a material anarchist. In his pictorial universe any existing product hierarchy has been abolished. He taints and alienates the perfect and gives the devalued a new brilliance. Nearly anything can become the raw material of his art. The classic canvas, plastic sheeting, Perspex plates, wood panels of various shapes and color, but also a sheer wall may provide a potential painting background. From a doormat which has been used as a spray template over parts of torn billboards, the handle of a paint roller, photographs, broken stretchers, cut up pieces of old pictures, rubber bands, shelf brackets; all this stuff comes into consideration to function as a direct or indirect material.

Those night pictures originated from a fail, a miss shot. The picture was way too dark so i decide to push the digital process with shadow level. The end result of that picture was kind of a revelation for me and I start to love the digital noise that most photographers try to avoid. I also start to shoot everything with the built in flash. Intrigued with all the reflection that I can produce at night on all kind of things like glass, trees, rain, etc. Things seems to reveal after.
One of the main theme for this book is the garden, the urban one, the suburb. I look on how people can decorate their front house, the backyard or a middle street. Everywhere we go, we try to control and organize nature all around us. I look for trace that we left. But this project is also about the walk. I like walking at night, especially in the winter time when everything seems in wait of a new life, a new beginning. I try to work with the relation between nature and digital reproduction. Focusing on the digital result itself and how it´s going to react in front of a certain situation.

BERLIN 1978-1987
Als der Fotograf Boris Becker seine erste umfangreiche Monografie mit dem Titel "Photographien 1984 bis 2009" vorlegte, umspannte diese genau fünfundzwanzig Jahre. Für den 1961 in Köln geborenen Künstler, wie er augenzwinkernd anmerkte, "ein Viertel Jahrhundert Quälerei". Doch auch davor hat Becker, der von 1984 bis 1990 an der Kunstakademie Düsseldorf bei Bernd Becher studiert hat, schon fotografiert: Das Buch "BERLIN 1978-1987" zeigt das Frühwerk des Fotografen, aufgenommen mit der Kleinbild- und Rollfilmkamera, das durch den Gang der Geschichte an Bedeutung gewonnen und unsere Wahrnehmung verändert hat. Boris Becker hat im geteilten Berlin fotografiert. Auf seinen Arbeiten sieht man, was der Krieg und die Trennung der Stadt in beiden Teilen auslösten. Das Buch ist in Kapitel aufgeteilt die Motivgruppen formen welche auch von der politischen Sensibilität des Künstlers zeugen: Der Ost-und Westteil der Stadt, Die Mauer und Grenzanlagen, das verödete Diplomaten-Viertel, die S-Bahn reduziert auf ihre hölzernen Wagons und menschenleere Stationen sowie eine Serie von Bunken, die später zu Beckers umfangreichster Serie mit über 700 Bunkern aud dem 2. Weltkrieg werden. Die Kölner Galerie Heinz Holtmann zeigte 2014 eine Auswahl von 46 Fotos. Das Buch "BERLIN 1978-1987" zeigt nun erstmals die gesmate Serie mit 55 Farb- und 34 Schwarzweiß Abbildungen.

The series "Chasing A Ghost" is focussing on the research of an artistic identity within the drawn line. Who do we see within the drawings? What do they reveal and what is it that they cover up? Basically, who is this man behind the line? Just like the needle of a seismograph, polygraph or electrocardiogram the lines are trying to capture a truth, make introspection and invisible processes visible and possibly succeed in transcribing a ghost. When two lines intersect, past and present meet involuntarily, form of a space, outline an object which then becomes a projection surface of future possibilities. The lines overlap, get wiped out, reseted, smeared and distorted until fragile structures appear, nothing solid yet, only networks, consolidations, objects in the making or in decay.
