Über biografische Lernprozesse alleinerziehender Mütter ist bislang noch wenig bekannt. An diesem Desiderat setzt die Studie an, in der die Frage verfolgt wird, welche Lern- und Bildungserfahrungen alleinerziehende Mütter in der Reflexion dieser eigenen biografischen Übergangsphase beschreiben. Außerdem wird beleuchtet, welche Herausforderungen mit dieser Phase verbunden sind und wie diese gegebenenfalls durch Bildungs- und Lernerfahrungen bewältigt werden.
Diese Fragestellung wird bearbeitet mit einem qualitativ-inhaltsanalytischen Forschungszugang, da die Subjektivität von biographischen Erfahrungen im Fokus stehen. Das Sample umfasst zehn Interviews mit alleinerziehenden Frauen, die hinsichtlich der Hauptsamplekriterien Alter, Lebenssituation, Bildungsabschluss, beruflicher Situation und Sorgerechtsregelung variieren. Als Ergebnis dieser Untersuchung zeigt sich, dass in Ergänzung zu den unterschiedlich wahrgenommenen Herausforderungen auch zahlreiche Unterstützungsmöglichkeiten eine zentrale Rolle spielen. Ein weiteres Hauptergebnis zeigt sich in der ambivalenten Wahrnehmung und Deutung des eigenen Selbstbildes und der Beziehung zu eigenen Kindern. Diese Ambivalenz wird jedoch in einer positiven Bilanzierung der eigenen Entwicklung aufgelöst. Lernprozesse und Erfahrungen werden im Ergebnis durch die Beschreibung unterschiedlicher Arten und Formen des Lernens sowie der Feststellung verschiedenartiger Lernanlässe sichtbar.

In «Alternative Mexiko» wird die Funktionalisierung nationaler Fremdbilder anhand exemplarischer US-amerikanischer Texte über Mexiko und die in ihnen angewandten Repräsentationsstrategien im Hinblick auf die jeweiligen Subtexte analysiert. Die Untersuchung demonstriert, in welcher Art und Weise die so «andere» Kultur Mexikos zum Zweck nationaler Selbsterkenntnis von Carleton Beals, Anita Brenner, Stuart Chase, John Dewey, Waldo Frank, Katherine Anne Porter und Frank Tannenbaum instrumentalisiert wird und welche Rückwirkungen die aus der Mexikobegeisterung zwischen 1920 und 1933 entstandenen Fremdbilder auf die nationalen und persönlichen Selbstbilder der Autorinnen und Autoren haben.
