The travel novel The Travel Diary of Ebrahim Beyg, dating from the late nineteenth century, is regarded as a pioneering account of the first political reform movement in Iran, the Constitutional Movement in 1906&1911. The story=s author, Zeyn al-Abedin Marage=i, not only initiated the development of modern Persian prose literature, but was also able to spread reforming ideas effectively to the masses. In the process, he drew on the ideas and concepts of his intellectual contemporaries, as well as existing traditions. His work thus created the basis for a new Iranian self-image, based on the religious tradition of Shiite Islam, patriotism, and Iranian history. In this study, Katja Föllmer focuses particularly on the author=s concept of the past. She explores the question of how the image of the pre-Islamic period conveyed in the Travel Diary takes account of the idea of progress and implements existing traditions. Der vorliegende Band richtet den Blick auf Individualisierungsprozesse in Ägypten, Iran, Libanon, Senegal und Tunesien als einen zentralen Aspekt aktueller gesellschaftlicher Dynamiken. Ausgangspunkt bildet die Frage, wie gesellschaftliche Transformationen das Feld des Religiösen beeinflussen und wie Prozesse religiösen Wandels gesellschaftliche Veränderungen anstoßen können. Die Beiträge in diesem Sammelband fokussieren auf die Lebensrealitäten von Frauen urbaner Mittelschichtsmilieus und zeigen auf, wie Bestrebungen zur individuellen Gestaltung des eigenen Lebens etablierten sozialen und religiösen Normen in unterschiedlichen Bereichen des Alltagslebens zuwiderlaufen, diese aber auch verändern können. Insbesondere ist das Augenmerk darauf gerichtet, wie sich diese Prozesse in Geschlechterbeziehungen und zwischen unterschiedlichen Generationen manifestieren. Dabei werden milieuspezifische Dynamiken analysiert. Diese sind vor allem der Einfluss westlicher Modernitätsideale, globalisierte Diskurse und Praktiken in der Freizeitgestaltung, im Bereich von Mode sowie anderen Ausdrucksformen individualisierter Lebensstile und werden im vorliegenden Band in spezifischen religiös und nicht-religiös konnotierten sozialen Zusammenhängen erörtert.

Persische Satire hat eine lange Tradition und ist gegenwärtig in allen iranischen Medien präsent. Dennoch ist vor allem die moderne Satire bislang nur ansatzweise erforscht. Dieser Band versteht sich daher als eine Einführung zu diesem umfassenden Gebiet. Hierfür sind Auszüge aus den Satirekolumnen der drei wichtigsten Satiriker von 1990 bis 2000 ausgewählt worden, um den Zusammenhang zwischen Satire, Medien und gesellschaftspolitischer Entwicklung darzustellen. Im Fokus der Untersuchung steht die offiziell geduldete bzw. ‚erwünschte‘ Pressesatire, die sich nach einer Phase der völligen Gleichschaltung der Printmedien ausdifferenzieren und professionalisieren konnte. Die Autorin sucht aus dem iranischen Verständnis jener Zeit heraus nach den diskursbestimmenden Faktoren in der öffentlichen Satirediskussion. Zunächst wirft sie einen Blick auf die iranische Satiretradition, die mit der islamischen Kultur eng verknüpft ist. Es werden die spezifischen persischen Begrifflichkeiten in ihrem gegenwärtigen Gebrauch systematisiert und voneinander differenziert. Mit Hilfe satiretheoretischer Ansätze und Auffassungen wird das Fundament, auf dem die iranische Satire dieser Zeit basierte, sichtbar gemacht. Schließlich wird an konkreten Beispieltexten die methodische Umsetzung der Satire in ihrem gesellschaftspolitischen Kontext analysiert.
